L’intérêt des collectionneurs pour les monnaies naît en Chine au VIe siècle de notre ère, soit près d’un millénaire avant le premier traité sur la numismatique en Occident. Il se maintient malgré le déclin et l’alternance des différentes dynasties impériales. Au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, l’empereur Qianlong possède la collection la plus complète comprenant toutes les monnaies émises en Asie orientale depuis le VIIe siècle avant notre ère, soit sur près de deux mille cinq cents ans.Mais les monnaies sont aussi soigneusement collectionnées et décrites par des lettrés, « amis des monnaies ».

We are interested in researchers who specialize in aspects of premodern China (pre-1800) in its broadest meaning, including (but not confined to) political and intellectual history, traditional literature and arts, material culture and archeology, economic and institutional history, religions in China, and so forth. National Museums Scotland is looking for an Assistant Curator for its Asian Section. The Asia Section cares for more than 40,000 objects from China, Japan, Korea, the Himalayas, the Middle East, and South and Southeast Asia. Collecting started from the middle of the 19th century, focussing on the arts and crafts of this region but also included prehistoric and ethnographical material. Particularly noteworthy, for example, are their Chinese ceramics which represent the production of many kilns in China from the late Neolithic period to the Cultural Revolution era.
