It is with the deepest regret that we share the news that He Kunyu, a field archaeologist and zooarchaeologist from the Chengdu City Institute of Archaeology and Cultural Relics passed away at 13:40 on December 29, 2021 in his hometown in Rucheng County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, at the age of 41 following a three-year battle with cancer.

我们非常遗憾要向大家报告一项令人悲伤的消息，那就是我们的好朋友──任职于成都市文物考古研究所的何锟宇，在2021年12月29日下午1点40分离我们而去了。他是一位优秀的田野考古学家和动物考古学家。历经抗癌三年，最后于他的老家湖南省郴州市汝城县辞世，享年41岁。

He Kunyu played an instrumental role in our understanding of the archaeology and zooarchaeology of southwest China and had a prolific publication record and history of excavation. He led excavations at one of the earliest known Neolithic sites on the Chengdu plain: Baodun, where his collaborative nature and encouragement of archaeological science, including archaeobotany and zooarchaeology changed our understanding of human environmental interaction on the Chengdu plain. He also spent time in the United States as part of the Chengdu Plain Archaeological Survey (CPAS). He participated in four of the five seasons of this international collaborative research project as a representative of the Chengdu City Institute of Archaeology and a core member of the surveys conducted around the Neolithic sites of Gucheng in Pixian County and Yufucun in Wenjiang.  He was a beloved team member of the CPAS team and led excavations at the site of Songjiaheba that helped us document the transition between the Sanxingdui and Shi’erqiao cultures and increased our understanding of settlement during this period of time. In 2009, as part of the CPAS collaboration, He visited the United States to attend the Arizona State University (ASU) archaeological field school, held in Kampsville, Illinois where he was exposed to approaches to fieldwork different than the standard methods used in Chinese archaeology, providing him with a broad awareness that he was able to apply to his own fieldwork in subsequent years and to the project he directed in Chengdu.

His research experience in China was not limited to work in rural parts of the Chengdu Plain.  The Tang Song Jiefang site in Jiangnanguan Street, in the center of Chengdu city, where he assisted in excavations, was awarded "2008 National Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries'' recognition. Additionally, the "Archaeological Excavation and Research of Zhaoguodong Site in Gui'an New District, Guizhou '' was selected as a National Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in 2020.

他的研究不限于成都平原郊区，他所支援的成都市中心的江南馆街唐宋街坊遗址，在2008年入選为全國十大考古新發現。他在贵州贵安招果洞遗址的发掘和研究，也获選为2020年全国十大考古新发现。

He Kunyu also made critical contributions to our understanding of how humans exploited animals in early southwest China and the margins of the eastern Tibetan plateau. For instance, at the site of Yingpanshan in Maoxian, Sichuan, he experimented with different methods of calculating the contribution of meat to animal bones and determined that much like sites in Gansu, pig meat formed a primary component of the diet with lower contributions of wild animals. At the sites of Haxiu and Shidaqiu in the upper Dadu river valley, his research determined that wild animals had a higher contribution of meat to the diet, which contributed to our understanding of how foragers and farmers interacted in this environment.

何锟宇对于史前人如何利用中国西南和青藏高原东缘的动物资源，同样做出了重要的贡献。如他在四川茂县的营盘山遗址，在实验了不同的动物肉量估算方法后，发现与甘肃的遗址相同，营盘山也是以猪作为主要肉食来源，辅以其他野生动物资源。另一方面，在大渡河上游的哈休和石达秋遗址中，他的研究则显示人们的饮食中有更多来自于野生动物。这些成果使我们对于史前采集者和农人的互动有更细致的了解。

He also published numerous papers on the zooarchaeology of historic period sites including the remains from boat coffins at Shangyejie, and from the Han tomb at Laoguanshan, but also as far as sites in Guizhou and Yunnan.

His research was far from limited to zooarchaeology, and he also made lasting contributions to our understanding of the Paleolithic and Neolithic of western Sichuan where he made critical advances in understanding how these cultures were related to those in Gansu province. His well-organized and detailed discussion on the Lijia periodization, for instance, enhanced our understanding of the nature of Yingpanshan site in the Upper Minjiang River and demonstrated his interests and capacity in reasoning and providing comprehensive viewpoints. 

他的研究不限于动物考古，其在四川新旧时器时代的卓越表现，不仅增进我们对于此地区文化的理解，对于四川西部与甘肃地区的关连，也有重要的启发。以他对甘肃林家遗址详细而有组织的讨论为例，便关系到我们如何理解岷江上游的营盘山遗址。由此，也展现了他在推理和综述文化面貌上的兴趣与能力。

He has always been highly collaborative, supportive of his colleagues work, free in sharing material and information, and always full of kindness and up for serious discussions as well as fun conversations. His kindness, friendship and brilliance are sorely missed by his colleagues.

他是我们最好的合作伙伴，总是支援同事间的工作，也乐于分享材料和信息；他待人总是充满善意，不但能进行严肃的讨论，也经常展现风趣幽默的一面。 他的同事和朋友们将非常想念他的善良、友谊和才华。

He Kunyu is survived by his partner, his daughter and his son who was born last year.
