SEAA is pleased to share information about the upcoming presentation of People and Plants in Southwest China: 3,000 Years of Agriculture from the First Villages to the Han Conquest by Rita Dal Martello (Edizioni Ca’Foscari, English, open access).

This monograph examines the archaeological evidence for ancient plant use in Yunnan, from the first sedentary villages to the Han conquest of the Dian Kingdom (third millennium BCE to early first millennium CE). It explores how local environmental and political contexts shaped agricultural practices, as well as connections between Yunnan and surrounding regions.

The author, Rita Dal Martello, is Assistant Professor of Chinese Art History and Archaeology at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, with extensive fieldwork experience in Yunnan and Central Asia. Her research integrates archaeobotanical analysis, material culture, and textual evidence to reconstruct early farming communities and their socio-political and ecological contexts.
