Silk Roads Archaeology Workshop

The Society for East Asian Archaeology (SEAA) is pleased to invite you to join us in London and Oxford for the Silk Roads Archaeology Workshop. The two-day event offers a free visit to the Silk Roads exhibition (https://www.britishmuseum.org/exhibitions/silk-roads) at the British Museum on 7 November, and a one-day in-person workshop at the China Centre, University of Oxford.

This workshop provides an opportunity for researchers to enjoy the exciting exhibition on how the journey of people, objects and ideas through the Silk Roads shaped cultures and histories across the world, and to present their own works on any new insights or discoveries relating to Silk Roads Archaeology. We look forward to receiving proposals for paper presentations. Examples of possible topics include, but are not limited to:

• Archaeological scientific approaches to Silk Roads related topics
• Theoretical themes pertaining to the Silk Roads, such as exploring movement or exchange
• Papers that focus on a particular site, region, or culture where technologies, artistic styles, or belief systems were under the impact of networks formed through the Silk Roads

The length of individual talks will be approximately 10-15 minutes, although the specifics will ultimately depend on the final number of proposed talks. The workshop language is English.

The deadline for the submission of presentation and registration of the workshop is August 31, 2024.

General information and procedures:

SEAA membership, workshop fee, and online registration

• All workshop participants are required to be current SEAA members. To join SEAA, please go to the membership section on the SEAA website at https://seaa-web.org/membership. Inquiries regarding a participant’s current SEAA membership should be directed to the SEAA Treasurer at treasurer@seaa-web.org. Once you become a SEAA member, you are eligible to submit paper proposals (you will see a tab appear in the next to registration).
• Participation of the event is free. During the two-day event, a free ticket to the Silk Roads exhibition at the British Museum will be provided for the visit on 7 November. Lunch and tea/coffee breaks will be provided for the workshop on 8 November. On the night of 8 November after the workshop, SEAA will host a get-together dinner for all participants at Oxford. Please register your interest via the online sign-up form if you wish to attend (participants need to pay for themselves, the cost per person estimated to be £25).
• Participants need to arrange and finance their own travel and housing. SEAA will provide a list of recommended hotels and information on how to get to the British Museum and the China Centre at Oxford.
• Registration for the Workshop needs to be done via the SEAA website at http://www.seaa-web.org/. Please note that registration and proposal submission are only possible for SEAA members, so that option only appears after signing into the website with the membership credentials.

Proposal submission process

• All proposal submissions are done online via the SEAA Website at http://www.seaa-web.org/. Please note that you need to be a SEAA member to be able to submit a proposal. There are three steps, first sign on the SEAA website with your membership credentials. Second, register for the workshop. Third, submit your proposal(s).
• All proposals should contain a precise title of the proposed presentation and an abstract of 150 to 300 words in English. The submission deadline is August 31, 2024.
• Once proposers have become current SEAA members and submitted their proposal, their proposal will be reviewed by the organizers. Once the proposal has been accepted, it will be incorporated into the workshop program. The decisions will be made before September 15, 2024.
